Founded by Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves as part of the Sherrill Milnes VOICE programs, the Savannah VOICE Festival celebrates its fifth season this August with three weeks of opera, musical theater and song! The Festival brings artists from around the world to the Hostess City with the mission of providing quality vocal music to Savannah and continuing the legacy of great singing.
This season, themed funny@five, features the comedic operas of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville as its centerpieces. Audiences can attend a “prelude” performance of Shave and a Haircut, a show by Festival Director Maria Zouves that introduces the Festival operas’ main characters.
Milnes and the Festival will also host friend and colleague Denyce Graves for a short residency, as she teaches VOICExperience singers both privately in the Studio, and in a public Master Class. The Milnes VOICE Studio takes place during the first two weeks of the Festival, and culminates in the student production of Le Nozze di Figaro and final showcase of Opera Scenes and Songs. Milnes offers Master Classes to the Milnes VOICE Studio throughout the Festival, which are free to attend and open to the public.
Other highlights include an evening of gypsy swing and some Barbra Streisand performed by VOICExperience alumna Jessica Ann Best with local Savannah band Velvet Caravan, a dinner event at Cha Bella restaurant with a performance by tenor Santiago Ballerini and friends, and Broadway VOICES, a concert of show tunes that promises to “make ’em laugh!”
