Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves direct Don Giovanni for Prague Summer Nights Festival

By July 1, 2015 No Comments

As the first American to sing the role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Estates Theater in Prague, legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes now takes the other side of the curtain in the famed theater where Don Giovanni had its world premiere. Sherrill directs Mozart and Da Ponte’s work for the Prague Summer Nights Young Artists Music Festival, which combines 45 singers and 55 musicians from around the world for a unique performance experience.

The production combines costumes from the National Theatre archives designed by Theodor Pistek, known as the costume designer for the Oscar-winning film Amadeus, and sets replicated from Josef Svoboda’s famous 1969 production. Sherrill co-directs the production with Maria Zouves. The cast includes Marcelo Ferriera and Taeeun Moon in the title role, with John Nardolillo conducting.

Performances take place July 3, 4, and 5 with two performances on July 4. Appropriately enough, the filming for the Don Giovanni scenes in Amadeus, shot in the Estates Theater, also coincided with the 4th of July.
